What We Do: Viscosity, In All Its Forms

Viscosity is complex property of material science.

Functional Products Inc. does many things, but above all we are experts in delivering to formulators the phenomenon of viscosity and viscoelasticity. We put viscosity in a drum with the specific handling and shear thinning behaviors to meet the demanding challenges of industrial lubricants, greases, personal care products, and paints and coatings.

Viscosity has both qualitative (how much viscosity? how many centistokes or centipoise?), but also qualitative properties. Non-Newtonian products experience changes in the viscosity as the product is poured, pumped, or otherwise manipulated at different rates. Viscosity also tends to thin out with increased operating temperatures. All of these factors must be considered by product designers for industrial applications.

Viscosity, operating speed, and equipment load are the three key factors which drive Tribology – the study of friction and wear. Functional Products Inc. has been a longstanding supplier of polymer-based additives and specialty additive packages for the tribology and lubrication market.

In applications like grease or semi-fluid products, you might also call this consistency or rheology.

Viscoelasticity can be added by our high molecular weight tackifiers to both prevent fling-off of lubricants and greases from high speed moving elements but also to draw the lubricant back into the site of motion where the wear occurs. Tackifiers also work to inhibit the formation of mist to reduce airborne oil particles for greater workplace safety in open lubrication systems or metalworking shops.

Functional Products Inc. continues to deliver both commodity and cutting edge options for viscosity and tack to all corners of the lubricant and grease market – even in specialty base fluids like vegetable oil, biodegradable esters, synthetics, silicone oil, and water. All you need to do is ask.
