Industrial Lubricant Additives

(click to open brochure)

FUNCTIONAL Industrial Packages are fully formulated concentrates that are added to a base oil at performance-specific amounts to create a finished fluid, hydraulic, gear or way oil, that meets all industry standards for the type of fluid.

Functional Products offers industrial packages for mineral and vegetable oil to make finished hydraulic fluids, gear oils and way oils. Download our catalog for physical data on these packages and the standards met by the finished fluids. Detailed performance data is available upon request.

Frequently Asked Questions about Industrial Additives

1. What are industrial lubricant additives and why are they important?

Industrial additives are concentrated blends that improve wear protection, demulsibility, and overall efficiency of oils used in manufacturing, mining, and energy operations. They turn base oils into finished lubricants that meet OEM and ISO standards.

2. What product families are offered in Functional’s Industrial Additives line?

Functional Products Inc. offers Way Oil (WA), Gear Oil (GA), Hydraulic Fluid (HF), Bar & Chain (BC), Rock Drill (RD), Saw Guide (SGP) packages, plus Pour Point Depressants (PD), Corrosion Inhibitors (CI), Antiwear/EP additives (AW & EP), Demulsifiers (DM), and Defoamers (DF).

3. Are Functional additives ashless and zinc-free?

Yes — most FUNCTIONAL brand industrial packages are ashless sulfur-phosphorus-nitrogen (S/P/N) systems that meet modern zinc-free and low-ash specifications.

4. What are Functional Way Oil Packages (WA-64 and WA-60SF)?

These are GM LS-2-grade slideway lubrication packages providing smooth motion, corrosion protection, and anti-stick-slip control. WA-60SF is a sulfur-free option for low color and yellow-metal safety.

5. What is the difference between GA-360, GA-360M, GA-614, and GA-400 gear-oil packages?

  • GA-360 / 360M: Zinc-free EP packages; GA-360M adds micropitting resistance.
  • GA-614: Ashless S/P/N top-tier EP package.
  • GA-400: NSF HX-1 ashless package for food-contact or clean-room applications.

6. How do hydraulic-fluid packages (HF-580 and HF-595) improve system life?

They supply antiwear, oxidation, and corrosion control while maintaining excellent filterability. HF-595 is Ecolabel-listed for environmentally acceptable hydraulic fluids (EALs).

7. What is the recommended treat rate for most industrial additive packages?

Typical usage is 1–3 wt % for additive packages and 0.05–0.3 wt % for defoamers or demulsifiers, depending on the base oil and viscosity target.

8. What are Bar & Chain Oil Packages (BC-10 and BC-15)?

Balanced packages providing antiwear, mild EP, and corrosion protection. BC-10 suits petroleum oils, while BC-15 is optimized for biobased EAL formulations.

9. How do Rock Drill Oil Packages (RD-540 and RD-540CP) differ?

RD-540 is an emulsifying EP package for air-tool and pneumatic drills; RD-540CP is demulsifying for closed-gear and high-water environments.

10. What makes Saw Guide Oil Packages (SGP-567 and SGP-563) unique?

They reduce friction and heat between blades and guides. SGP-563 is Ecolabel-listed and phosphorus-free, ideal for low-impact forestry lubricants.

11. What do Pour Point Depressants (PD-610, PD-620, PD-630) do?

They prevent wax crystallization in Group I–III oils, improving cold-flow and start-up performance in industrial and hydraulic fluids.

12. Which Pour Point Depressant should I choose?

  • PD-610: Medium–heavy Group I/II oils
  • PD-620: Light Group I–III oils
  • PD-630: Group III synthetic oils (4–8 cSt)

13. What corrosion inhibitors are available for industrial lubricants?

CI-426 & CI-427: Neutral amine phosphates for ferrous metals.
CI-408: For glycol/water systems.
CI-498: For aqueous and synthetic coolants; NSF HX-1 listed.

14. How do Antiwear and Extreme-Pressure additives (AW-116 and CI-426EP) work?

They form protective phosphate or sulfide films that prevent metal-to-metal contact, lowering wear and extending gear or pump life.

15. Are there water-soluble antiwear additives?

Yes — AW-487 delivers antiwear and lubricity in water-based lubricants and metal-working fluids.

16. What are Functional Demulsifiers (DM-240 and DM-400)?

They promote rapid water separation in oils failing ASTM D1401 tests. DM-240 (PAG) is high-efficiency industrial; DM-400 is NSF HX-1 and Ecolabel compliant.

17. What are Functional Defoamers (DF-110, DF-400, DF-500)?

  • DF-110: Silicone defomer for synthetic Group III/IV oils.
  • DF-400: Versatile Ecolabel/NSF HX-1 silicone grade.
  • DF-500: Acrylate defoamer for vegetable and ester systems.

18. How do demulsifiers and defoamers complement industrial packages?

They are optional “finishing” components that fine-tune air release, water separation, and foam control for custom base oils.

19. Are Functional additives compatible with biobased or EAL lubricants?

Yes — HF-595, SGP-563, DF-500, DM-400, and BC-15 meet Ecolabel or VGP standards for biodegradable lubricants.

20. What is meant by an “ashless S/P/N” formulation?

It refers to sulfur, phosphorus, and nitrogen-containing organic molecules that deliver EP/AW protection without metallic ash.

21. Do Functional additives change oil color or odor?

Low-sulfur products such as WA-60SF maintain light color, low odor, and better copper compatibility in finished oils. If color of your finished lubricants is a key concern then let us know and we’ll build a lower color version around our core chemistry and your requirements.

22. How should additive packages be blended?

Warm the base oil to 40–60 °C with mild agitation, dissolve the additive fully, then add defoamer and demulsifier last to maintain activity.

23. What packaging and shelf life are typical?

Available in 5-gal pails, 55-gal drums, and 275-gal totes with a two-year shelf life in sealed containers at ambient temperature.

24. Does Functional provide formulation or technical support?

Yes — our technical service team assists with treat rates, compatibility, and performance testing to meet OEM or Ecolabel specifications.
